What is an intensive outpatient program (IOP)?
An IOP is a level of addiction and mental health care that’s more structured than standard outpatient treatment but doesn’t require living at a facility. You attend several treatment sessions each week — typically a few hours per day, multiple days a week — and return home afterward. That balance makes IOP a strong fit for people who need real clinical support but also have work, family, or school commitments to maintain.
IOP often follows detox or a partial hospitalization program (PHP), and many people step down into standard outpatient (OP) as they stabilize.
Who is IOP a good fit for?
IOP may be right for you if you:
- Have completed detox or a higher level of care and want continued structure
- Have a supportive, stable living environment to return to each day
- Need flexible treatment that works around a job, school, or family
- Are stepping up from standard outpatient care and need more support
It may not be the right starting point if you still need medically supervised detox or 24-hour care first — in which case we’ll help you find the right level of care and step you into IOP when you’re ready.
What we treat in our IOP
Our IOP supports recovery from a range of substances, including alcohol, opioids (including heroin and fentanyl), methamphetamine, cocaine, benzodiazepines, and prescription medications. We also treat co-occurring mental health conditions through our dual diagnosis program, because lasting recovery means treating both at once.
How our IOP works at Zoe Behavioral Health Work?
Every plan is individualized, but our IOP generally combines:
- Individual therapy with a licensed clinician
- Group therapy with others in recovery
- Evidence-based approaches such as CBT and DBT
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and psychiatric support where appropriate
- Relapse-prevention and aftercare planning
For clients who want extra structure outside of session hours, we can discuss sober living options.

Frequently asked questions
How many days a week is IOP?
Most intensive outpatient programs meet several days a week for a few hours per session. We’ll confirm your exact schedule based on your treatment plan.
Can I keep working or going to school during IOP?
Yes — that’s one of the main advantages of IOP. Sessions are scheduled to let you maintain work, school, and family responsibilities while in treatment.
Do I need to complete detox before IOP?
Often, yes. IOP usually follows detox or a higher level of care. If you still need detox, we’ll help you arrange it first.
Does insurance cover IOP?
Most major PPO plans provide coverage. We verify your specific benefits for free — verify your insurance or call 949-309-2227.
How is IOP different from PHP?
PHP (partial hospitalization) is more intensive, meeting most days of the week. IOP involves fewer hours, making it a common step down from PHP or detox.
