Can couples go to rehab together?

Yes. And it often works better.

When both partners use, getting sober alone means going home to the same triggers. Couples rehab treats each of you as an individual and treats the relationship too.

At Zoe, you each have your own clinician and treatment plan. You also attend behavioral couples therapy together, where you practice healthier ways to communicate, cope and support each other’s sobriety.

“Together” doesn’t mean identical. If one of you needs more structure, one partner can be in PHP while the other attends IOP, and you still meet for couples sessions.

Individual plans

Each partner gets their own assessment, clinician and goals.

Couples therapy

Shared sessions focused on the relationship and on recovery.

Group & family

Group therapy, plus family sessions when they help.

Dual diagnosis

Anxiety, depression or trauma treated alongside addiction.

How it works

From first call to first day

1

Call or send the form

One confidential conversation about what’s going on with both of you. No judgment, no pressure.

2

We check both policies

Each partner’s treatment is billed to their own plan, so we verify benefits for each of you, for free.

3

Phone assessment, then start

A staff physician recommends a level of care for each partner. If detox is needed first, we coordinate it.

Programs

A level of care for each partner

You start where you need to and step down as you stabilize. Couples sessions are scheduled around both programs.

Most structure

Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

Most of the day in treatment at our Lake Forest center, home or in sober living at night. A strong start after detox, or when you need daily support.

Flexible schedule

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Several hours a day, several days a week of individual and group therapy, with room left for work, school and family.

Step-down

Outpatient (OP)

Regular counseling and group therapy as you return to everyday life, with your clinical team still in your corner.

Typical length: PHP and IOP usually run about 90 days, stepping down as you stabilize. A staff physician recommends your starting level after a free phone assessment.
Need detox first? We coordinate detox with trusted local partners, then bring you straight into our program. Dual diagnosis care and MAT (buprenorphine/Suboxone, naltrexone) are available.
Coming from outside Orange County?

Many couples come to Lake Forest for treatment

Outpatient treatment works for out-of-area couples when you have a safe, sober place to stay nearby. Our admissions team can tell you about independent sober living homes near our center and what’s available for couples.

Housing is arranged and paid for separately from treatment. We’ll be clear about what your insurance covers and what it doesn’t before you make any plans.

Is couples rehab right for you?
It tends to work best when you live together, share triggers, and are both committed to the relationship and to getting sober.

If there is violence, threats or coercive control in the relationship, joint therapy isn’t safe. Every couple is assessed first, and we’ll treat partners individually where needed. If you’re in danger, call 911 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

Can couples go to rehab together?
Yes. At Zoe, partners attend outpatient treatment at the same center. Each person has their own treatment plan and individual therapy, and you attend behavioral couples therapy together.
Is this inpatient or outpatient?
Zoe is an outpatient program: partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatient (OP). You attend treatment during the day and stay at home or in sober living. If you need detox first, we coordinate it with local partners.
Does insurance cover couples rehab?
Each partner’s treatment is billed to their own plan, even on a family policy. Many commercial and PPO plans cover outpatient addiction treatment. We check both of your benefits for free before you start. We don’t accept Medi-Cal or Medicaid.
What if only one of us is ready?
That’s common. The partner who is ready can start now, and the other can join couples sessions as a support person. If they decide to enter treatment too, we build their own plan.
Can we be at different levels of care?
Yes. One partner can be in PHP while the other attends IOP, and you still meet for couples sessions.
We don’t live in Orange County. Can we still come?
Yes. Many people travel to Orange County for outpatient treatment and stay in sober living nearby. Admissions can tell you about independent sober living options. Housing is arranged and paid separately from treatment.
Is it confidential?
Yes. Calls and forms are confidential and handled in line with HIPAA.

You don’t have to do this one at a time

One confidential call. Admissions answers 24/7, checks both partners’ insurance and books your phone assessment with a staff physician.
